Can homeschool students participate in UIL activities?

Updated July 1, 2026Coach Navigator

Short answer

Yes. Texas law now allows eligible homeschool students to participate in UIL activities at the public school in their attendance zone. The student must meet enrollment/notification, academic, and other UIL eligibility requirements the same as enrolled students.

Texas law opened UIL participation to home-schooled students. A qualifying homeschool student may join UIL activities through the public school for the attendance zone in which they reside.

What the family and school must do

  • Provide the required notice of intent to participate by the school's deadline.
  • Demonstrate academic eligibility consistent with the No Pass, No Play standard, using the law's assessment provisions.
  • Meet all other UIL eligibility rules (age, residence, amateur status, etc.).

The exact documentation and timelines are set by statute and district policy, and this is a newer area, so confirm the current requirements with your district's UIL contact before the season starts.
