Do UIL eligibility rules apply to marching band and fine arts?

Updated July 1, 2026Coach Navigator

Short answer

Yes. UIL academic eligibility rules, including No Pass, No Play, apply to all extracurricular participation — marching band, choir, theater/one-act play, cheer, dance/drill team, and academic contests — not only to athletics. A failing grade can sideline a student from a performance just like a game.

Eligibility is not just an athletics issue. The same UIL and state academic rules that govern sports apply to every extracurricular activity, including performing and academic programs.

Activities covered

  • Marching band and other UIL music events.
  • Theater and one-act play.
  • Cheer, dance, and drill team performances at contests.
  • UIL academic and speech/debate contests.

That means a student failing a class becomes ineligible to perform or compete in these activities during the suspension, though they can keep rehearsing. Directors and sponsors should track eligibility on the same three-week cycle coaches use.

Related questions

Does No Pass No Play affect marching band?

Yes. A student who fails a class becomes ineligible to perform in UIL marching band contests during the suspension, the same as an athlete missing games.

Can an ineligible student still rehearse with the group?

Yes. Students may continue to practice and rehearse while ineligible; they simply cannot perform or compete until eligibility is regained.

Do academic UIL contests follow the same rules?

Yes. UIL academic and speech/debate contests follow the same eligibility standards as athletics and fine arts.
